Joanna Sims graduated from Waltham Forest School of
Art in 1972. After moving to Dorset, and family life, she taught life classes
for 18 years with North Dorset Adult Education, and privately. Her landscapes
and life studies have been shown nationally, also in Berlin and Brisbane,
Australia.
The paintings are primarily in pastel, occasionally with a
watercolour base. The studio is situated on the river Wylye in the Wiltshire
downland, which provides the main starting point and impetus.
The
immediacy of pastels she finds helpful in conveying the transient nature of
light in both the downland and coastal works.
The Australian paintings
reflect her coastal childhood, reinforced by visits to Queensland over the
years.
These are exotic memories of glowing seas; sometimes dramatic
storms. The use of saturated colours is in strong contrast to the neutrals of
the English paintings.
